Is Materialism Toxic

Living beyond one’s means has dragged many couples into endless debts and much heartache.
ThoughtCo. describes Materialism as “the idea that everything is either made only of matter or is ultimately dependent upon matter for its existence and nature” This “matter” is usually Money or possessions. The satisfaction we experience from acquiring wealth and enjoying a measure of protection if offers, can be rewarding. Soon thereafter, we may feel that this “Peace” fades as quickly as the mist.
Materialism Symptoms
Are you defined or define others by possessions?
If asked, very few people would like to come out as being materialistic, but almost everyone would pride in being ambitious and money minded. Being able to make smart investment plans and growing one’s wealth is a coveted skill.
Some self-examination is needed to find out if you are materialistic.
Do you feel empty soon after working so hard to acquire what you “really needed”?
Do we have a strong desire for more?
So, how do you draw the line?
Many people mistake materialism to wealth. But even those with very little resources can be materialistic. How? If money and the things it can buy takes precedence in your life. If your mood is set by your current financial situation. These factors draw the line. There are certain avenues that push us to have an improper view of “things”
Genuine Need or Greedy upgrade?
“If everyone demanded peace instead of another television set, then there’d be peace” – John Lennon.
The commercial world has been designed to sap our physical and mental energy. Even before we begin to enjoy the luxuries it offers, we quickly feel the urge to upgrade.
The stabs from a materialistic lifestyle hurts us and those we love. Modern building materials may push us to prematurely renovate our homes. Upgrades in technology force us to purchase new devices.
My iPad is still in good shape, I have enjoyed using it over the years, its portability allows me to work from anywhere. A few years later, I realize I have to update an App. that I use often. The message I get from the App Store says I need to have a newer version of the iOS. Obviously, I try to update the software, but I am unable to. My iPad has no upgrade for this iOS. I surely need to buy a newer version of this iPad. Is this a Genuine or greedy upgrade? or is it a commercially designed upgrade? You may debate.
Some people tend to change or improve their devices simply because they have had them for too long, or a better looking/expensive Model is in the market. They might know very little about the improved features that would be useful to them.
Materialism causes us to improve our status in society. What matters is how people will gauge us. Where we are placed.
How Love is Affected
Healthy relationships thrive on sacrifice and depth. To love means valuing more than we can touch and see. Affection is inner and surpasses any glamour and luxury material things have to offer.
A materialistic person is not able to display selfless love. They place tangible value to Love. Living beyond one’s means has dragged many couples into endless debts and much heartache.
Do you think it is worthwhile to fight materialism and root it off our system?
